January in the Vermont Studio

Switching Gears

With January and February exhibits in Boston and lots of back-and-forth driving, I had to suspend my annual 30-in-30 this January. It’s a different winter for me this year.

I’ll be painting in oil this month and next —a much slower process— so I’ll probably set myself up with a challenge for March. But in meantime, I plan to share a bit of my process.

Most of my work on panel begins with a wash of color at the base, and then an underpainting (or often, more accurately, an under “drawing” with oil bar). Later on, after many layers, I will scrape away areas to reveal bits of this luminous beginning. Some pieces expose more and some reveal less of the early part of the story.
